Book Review: Rising Strong: The Reckoning, The Rumble. The Revolution.

A new book: “Rising Strong: The Reckoning, The Rumble. The Revolution.“Dr. Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW Guess what?  I am so excited to announce that Dr.Brené Brown has a new book coming out and she sent them to all of her certified facilitators before it is released in August!  It’s called:  Rising Strong: The Reckoning, The Rumble. The Revolution. Dr. Brené knew when she was writing The Gifts of Imperfection and Daring Greatly that she would be using the data she has collected over the years to address the issue many of her readers have asked her which is, “I dared greatly, I was brave. I got my butt kicked and now I’m down for the count. How do I get back up?” Rising Strong is about what Dr. Brené has learned about surviving hurt that actually saved her again and again. It saved her and

EMBRACE the Empty Nest!

EMBRACE the Empty Nest!

See Maria  on Friday, April 10th on Fox 28 Good Day Columbus at 9:00 am, talking about Embracing the Empty Nest! There are two things people have a difficult time managing and that is change and uncertainty. We feel comfortable when we know what is going to happen next but change is ALWAYS there and something we can’t control, so what do we do about change? We EMBRACE it!!! Nothing “hits home” more about how to handle change and uncertainty when the time comes for a parent(s) to accept the realization that they are officially an “empty nester.”  The fact is we love, nurture, and support our children the moment they are born which becomes a vocation in a way.  We spend an extraordinary amount of our time giving them everything they need in order for them to eventually discover what their gift will

A Gift from My Dad

A Gift from My Dad

“As I am quietly sitting here next to my Dad and listening to the rhythm of his breathing synchronizing with the oxygen machine, I realize how precious the one act of just being able to breathe can be…” I wrote this in my journal last week just a few days before he died. During the time I spent with my Dad, he had such moments of being the Dad I always knew, but most of his days were spent sleeping and I could tell when he was having a wonderful dream because he would smile a lot!! At times, he seemed finally willing to surrender to the inevitable part of life that we only go through on our own; accepting the fact we don’t live forever and that death is such a solitary, personal experience.  Nothing is able to stop this process, yet somehow it is

Whole Hearted Living in 2015

Whole Hearted Living in 2015

My wish to you this time of year is that you take some time to reflect on the goodness of your previous year, and then look forward to 2015.   Too often we think only about the things we want to change in the future instead of thinking of the moments that we loved in the past and in the NOW. How about doing a Last Year’s Reflection on what was great about 2014? You can do your New Year’s Resolutions list as well, but start with thinking about what is right with your life and then consider what you’d like to change. As a society, we ALL need to learn to appreciate the small things, the good things and what we love about ourselves more. What have you experienced in 2014 that you feel great about? Love? Compassion? Forgiveness? New Energy? Success? Accomplishments?

What do you REALLY want for the holidays?

What do you REALLY want for the holidays?

If we were honest with ourselves I believe what most people want for the holidays is to take a break from the usual holiday expectations and just enjoy time to relax with family and friends. Unfortunately, most of us might feel that our “To Do List” is running the holiday show!  Dr. Brené Brown; author of the very successful book “Daring Greatly” recently wrote about this very topic and stated: “I’m NOT the victim of this holiday circus, I’m the ringmaster!”  Her insight about the stress during the holidays began to change when she asked herself about the cost of putting on the show.  My favorite part in the book was when she describes trying to send out 225 Christmas cards a few years ago and her family kept interrupting her to the point in which she yelled, “I HAVE to finish these Christmas

Self Compassion – Do You Talk To Yourself Like Someone You Love?

Self Compassion – Do You Talk To Yourself Like Someone You Love?

Most of us have heard or read about the topics: self love, honoring our inner child and self nurturing, but we still listen to our inner critic berating us for the mistakes we’ve made, our imperfections, unrealized dreams, messy lives, broken relationships and on and on. In my work I’ve discovered that being kind and compassionate with ourselves not only makes us feel better, but more importantly it allows us to become more mindful and aware that we are NOT alone; everyone struggles!    What is self compassion? It is the willingness to feel pain not push it away, FEEL it and then move THROUGH it.  This practice involves learning to relax and allow you to move gently your fears.  The trick is to stay with our emotions but not attaching ourselves to them.  A good question to ask yourself; “What would I say

If you know me, you know I love to read! I’m constantly recommending books to friends, colleagues and patients. For your convenience, I’ve listed them below with a short synopsis of why I think they’re so great! Enjoy! 1. The Boy Who Was Raised by a Dog Dr. Bruce Perry, a child psychologist writes about his innovative methods for helping treat children that  have faced unimaginable horror: genocide survivors, witnesses to their own parents’ murder and victims of family violence. He explains what happens to the brain when children are exposed to extreme stress and he tells their stories of trauma and transformation by helping them ease their pain and allowing them to become healthy adults.
